Topography

On the Concept of Topography (Stefanie B?rkle)

Topography comes from the Greek τόπος, t?pos (“place”) and γραφειν, grafe?n (“to draw, describe”); literally, it is a description of place, a sketch of the terrain. This definition is a starting point for our urban investigations. By inspecting and describing places in Berlin we have attempted to create an urban cartography, a mapping from the migrant’s perspective. How is the urban space seen and experienced? Do people perceive their movements differently before and after the fall of the Wall? How do the migrated spaces manifest in the city landscape? Have they changed, or have their niches remained unaffected by the transformations?
